Janet Wood MBE

I joined Uley parish council in 1976 and served concurrently as an independent District councillor for 27 years. In that time I delivered a Conservation Area and village Development Boundary.

In about 1988 I persuaded the District Council to buy the west end of Uley Bury (being ruined by motorcycles) to add to the land bought by villagers in the 1930’s. Those woodlands and grasslands are now managed by a Joint Woodland Committee to enhance flora and fauna by means of grazing and working parties.

All this time the parish council campaigned for some affordable housing for local people to rent and this was finally achieved in 2015, followed by allotments opened in 2016.

In 2010 the parish council held a public meeting which launched a steering committee to start a voluntary community shop where I enjoy working.

I was most touched and honoured to be awarded the MBE in 2011 by HM the Queen for services to the village of Uley. I enjoy working with my colleagues to help achieve these outcomes.
