Uley Parish Council   

The Cam, Dursley and Uley Joint Woodland Management Committee was established in 1989 

to manage woodland and grassland owned by Stroud District Council (SDC) according to current best practice. It is dedicated for the purpose of recreation and exercise of local people and visitors. 

No shooting is allowed. It is funded by SDC, Natural England and the Forestry Commission. The Cotswold Way National Trail both skirts and crosses the holding.

The committee is composed of six members, two elected members from each parish council. 

It is served by a clerk (from April 2023 Mrs Christina Carter). The committee meets quarterly in Cam Parish Rooms.

DESCRIPTION OF HOLDING

40 hectares of woodland in Dursley and Cam from The Broadway to Lister Drive.

31 hectares of grassland and woodland known as Cam Peak and Long Down.

5.1 hectares of grassland and woodland on the slopes of the south-western end of Uley Bury Romano-British hillfort, scheduled ancient monument.

HISTORY OF ULEY HOLDING

The majority of the Uley land was bought by public subscription in the 1930’s. This effort was led by Dr Campbell of Raglan House. It was vested in the care of the then local authority and passed to SDC in 1974 when it was formed.

A final 1.5 hectares, which is mostly grassland and includes the quarry and part of the rampart overlooking the Severn, was bought by SDC when it came up for sale in 1989.

ULEY BURY PROJECT

Uley Bury Grassland project was established 2007/8 with the aim to maintain and increase limestone grassland with its unique flora and fauna.

We are now in the eighth year of our Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) agreement with Natural England. Prior to this, funding was provided by the Board of Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to establish summer grazing. Old fencing was removed to increase public access and new fencing was erected, mostly in the woods, with gates to allow cattle grazing.

ULEY BURY WORKING PARTY

In addition to the above we need volunteers to remove encroaching undergrowth on the steep slopes. The Uley Bury Working Party meets once a month in the winter. We are very grateful for their contribution and new volunteers are welcome. The Cotswold Warden Service also helps us.
